Young engineer’s KashmiriGPT bridges generational language gap
Innovative AI platform aims to preserve and promote Kashmiri language and culture
SRINAGAR (MNTV) — Saqlain Yousuf, a tech graduate from South Kashmir’s Pulwama district, has launched KashmiriGPT, the first AI-powered assistant dedicated to the Kashmiri language.
This initiative, developed under Yousuf’s vision to preserve the region’s linguistic heritage, is set to bridge the generational gap and promote the Kashmiri language through technology.
Unlike simple translation tools, KashmiriGPT provides a comprehensive platform that supports both Roman Kashmiri and English inputs, generating responses in Kashmiri script, Roman Kashmiri, and English.
The platform aims to connect younger Kashmiris with their cultural roots while helping older generations communicate in the language.
Yousuf, who graduated in 2023, was driven by the absence of Kashmiri on major AI platforms like ChatGPT. “While all major languages are included, Kashmiri was missing. This motivated me to act,” Yousuf said to United News of India.
Having dedicated over five months to the project, Yousuf’s creation goes beyond language translation. KashmiriGPT offers a resource for learning the language and exploring Kashmir’s rich history and culture. Despite being in its early stages, the platform attracted 4,000 users within three days, far exceeding expectations.
However, further development, including the addition of voice features, requires funding and additional support. Currently in beta testing, Yousuf aims to refine KashmiriGPT based on user feedback.
Beyond language, Yousuf envisions KashmiriGPT as a tool for preserving the Muslim-majority region’s 5,000-year-old history. “Kashmir’s unique heritage must be documented and shared,” he emphasized.
Experts in language preservation have hailed Yousuf’s initiative as a significant step in using AI to protect cultural legacies.
