Workers in eastern and southern US ports go on strike after 47 years
Port workers have gone on strike in Baltimore, Maryland.
This is following a dispute between the International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance.
They failed to reach an agreement on better wages and automation.
Workers walked off the job in the first strike organized by the union since 1977.
It will affect 36 ports.
Experts say the disruption in the supply chain could affect the economy, especially if it is prolonged.
They note that some effects will be felt immediately, specifically with shortages of perishable fresh and frozen foods.
