Women-only gyms cater to Muslim women’s fitness needs in the UK
UK-based gym initiatives prioritize Muslim women’s needs, offering faith-specific accommodations
WEST YORKSHIRE (MNTV) – Muslim women in the U.K. are increasingly seeking women-only gyms that cater to their cultural and religious needs, a shift highlighted by the growth of facilities such as Health Club for Her in Batley, West Yorkshire.
According to a report by U.K.-based outlet Hyphen, these spaces offer a supportive environment where Muslim women can work out without concerns about harassment or modesty.
“Many women prefer not to attend mixed-gender gyms, and this was the gap Health Club for Her aimed to fill,” explains communications manager Rikki Hussain to Hyphen.
Opened in 2016, the gym offers a ladies-only setting, providing prayer rooms and freezing memberships during Ramadan.
These features ensure that Muslim women can train with confidence, free from judgment about their attire.
The demand for such spaces reflects broader trends in the fitness industry.
As gyms become more inclusive, venues like Health Club for Her, WOH Gym in Newport, and Swann Fitness in Oldham have adapted to meet the needs of Muslim women.
The rise of modest activewear brands, along with mainstream brands like Nike and Adidas offering modest workout options, has made it easier for Muslim women to exercise comfortably.
Personal trainer Aishah Siddique, who works exclusively with Muslim women, believes that women-only gyms help reduce the toxicity often found in mixed-gender spaces.
“As a hijabi, I never felt comfortable in gyms surrounded by topless men. Modesty is key for many Muslim women, and we need spaces where we can feel safe,” Siddique said to Hyphen.
This shift is part of a larger movement where attitudes toward fitness among Muslim women are evolving.
Many now prioritize health as a response to prevalent health issues like diabetes and heart disease in their communities.
With gyms now incorporating strength training equipment tailored to their needs, Muslim women are gaining confidence in pursuing fitness goals while honoring their faith and modesty.
