VOTER INTIMIDATION REPORTED IN SEVERAL STATES AS NAACP MONITORS THE POLLS
The NAACP has announced a program allowing people who have concerns about voter intimidation at polling places to file reports.
The move comes as some incidents have already been reported ahead of the midterm elections.
Derrick Johnson is the NAACP’s President and CEO
On Tuesday, he tweeted, “If you encounter any voter intimidation at the polls today, use our form to report it!! The NAACP’s legal team will be monitoring incidents around the country today.”
The voter incident report form is designed to track and respond to alleged voter suppression incidents.
That includes making people aware of legal action that can be pursued.
Reports submitted via the form will be reviewed by a team of legal professionals at the NAACP’s Office of General Counsel.
They will determine whether specific accounts warrant litigation.
Here are the states that have seen reports of alleged voter intimidation tactics heading into Election Day:
Louisiana: A polling location in Louisiana was moved from one school to another on Tuesday following a bomb threat, according to John Tobler, the deputy secretary of communications and outreach at the Louisiana Department of State.
-The threat was made at Kenner Discovery, a school roughly 20 minutes outside of New Orleans. Voters who typically cast ballots at the polling site were asked to relocate to Audubon Elementary School.
Arizona
-The Arizona Board of Elections has flagged 18 alleged instances of voter intimidation across the state and referred them to federal law enforcement agencies for review since the start of early voting on Oct. 12.
-No instances of voter intimidation were reported by the Secretary of State’s Office on Tuesday, according to a local ABC affiliate.
-The reports of alleged intimidation coincide with the state’s largest county reporting around 20% of polling locations experiencing technical difficulties with ballot tabulators.
-Election officials in Maricopa County posted a video explaining the problems surrounding voting machines and told the public they were working to fix the situation.
-“We’re trying to fix this problem as quickly as possible,” Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Bill Gates said in a video shared on Twitter Tuesday morning.
North Carolina
Officials in North Carolina announced late Monday evening they were investigating reports of suspected voter intimidation.
-Election officials with the North Carolina State Board of Elections said 16 incidents of voter intimidation have been reported since the start of early in-person voting, according to reports from ABC News.
-Alleged incidents were reported in several counties, including Wake, Mecklenburg, Columbus, and Wayne, the board said.
-Incidents included voters and election workers being yelled at, one-stop workers being photographed or recorded, and poll watchers being too close to voters, according to the board.
