Uzbekistan to modernize energy sector with large-scale efficiency upgrades
TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (MNTV) – Uzbekistan is set to implement a major energy sector overhaul as part of the “Uzbekistan – 2030” strategy, which prioritizes environmental protection and the transition to a “green” economy. According to Uz Daily, the country plans to decommission outdated thermal power plant units and adopt modern energy-saving technologies to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
Between 2025 and 2027, 23 inefficient thermal power plant units with a combined capacity of 3,257 MW will be taken offline. This initiative follows the Presidential Decree of January 30, 2025, and the Presidential Resolution of February 27, 2025, aimed at optimizing energy resource utilization.
The decommissioning will affect plants in Syrdarya, Talimarjan, Angren, Novo-Angren, Tashkent, and Navoi, as well as the Fergana combined heat and power plant. Notably, 80% of the decommissioned capacity belongs to JSC “Thermal Power Plants.”
Simultaneously, Uzbekistan is advancing new energy projects. At the Talimarjan thermal power plant (TPP), three to four combined-cycle gas turbine units with a total capacity of 1,065 MW are nearing completion. Meanwhile, the Navoi TPP is developing a 650 MW combined-cycle gas turbine unit to improve efficiency.
Tashkent is also seeing investments in cogeneration capacity. In the Sergeli district, a 2.3 MW power unit is under development, capable of generating 11 Gcal of heat. In Yunusabad, a 100 MW gas-piston unit is under construction at the 4th heating plant. Additional projects in Mirzo-Ulugbek, Yangikhayot, Uchtepa, and Yashnabad districts are expected to launch in 2025.
These initiatives reflect Uzbekistan’s commitment to modernizing its energy infrastructure, reducing environmental impact, and accelerating the shift toward cleaner and more sustainable power generation.
