Uzbekistan, China deepen trade ties with new industrial projects
TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (MNTV) – Trade relations between Uzbekistan and China are deepening as the two countries collaborate on new industrial and technological projects. The latest development is the launch of a battery manufacturing plant for electric scooters in the Kokand Free Economic Zone (FEZ), marking another milestone in their growing economic partnership.
According to Kun.uz , the Hong Gang International joint venture, which officially began operations on March 22, was established with $11 million in direct investment and has created 300 jobs.
The factory will initially produce 250,000 lead-based batteries annually. Additionally, Chinese investors have launched another project in the Kokand FEZ worth $60 million, signaling continued confidence in Uzbekistan’s industrial sector.
This expansion aligns with Uzbekistan’s broader strategy to strengthen its electrical engineering industry. A decree signed by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in 2021 aimed to boost electric scooter production, leading to the establishment of four private enterprises in Kokand FEZ with a combined capacity of 28,000 units per year.
Beyond battery production, Uzbekistan and China are working on a large-scale industrial technology park in the Samarkand region. Backed by Chinese investors, the 300-hectare park will house 12 investment initiatives, research and logistics zones, and advanced manufacturing facilities.
The project, discussed between Uzbekistan’s Deputy Minister of Investments, Industry, and Trade Ilzat Kasimov and Chinese business leaders, aims to enhance high-value production and promote technological exchange between the two nations.
China’s involvement in Uzbekistan’s industrial development extends further. In Almalyk, construction is underway on the Buyuk Ipak Yuli industrial zone, where joint projects will produce small refrigerators, transformers, textiles, and pharmaceuticals. Meanwhile, in Bukhara, discussions are ongoing with South Korea’s AIMS company about another battery production plant for electric scooters.
With increasing Chinese investment in key sectors, Uzbekistan is positioning itself as a regional hub for advanced manufacturing and technology. The partnership is expected to accelerate economic growth, create new jobs, and deepen bilateral trade ties in the years ahead.
