Uyghur journalists imprisoned for alleged terror links in northwest China
Authorities in Chinese occupied Eastern Turkistan have sentenced five Uyghur journalists to seven years in prison.
Those imprisoned are Mirkamil Ahmed, Semet Ababekri, Abdukadir Rozi, Mehmut Abdukeyum and Akber Osman.
They were convicted for their connections with Voice of America journalist, Kasim Kashgar, who fled northwest China in 2017 and now reports on Uyghur human rights for VOA.
Kashgar learned about the men’s arrests through overseas contacts.
He said they have been falsely accused of terrorism and separatism.
The Chinese government claimed Kashgar attempted to recruit them into the World Uyghur Congress.
This has been refuted by the Congress as a lie.
The arrests occurred during widespread detentions of Uyghur intellectuals and leaders by Chinese authorities aiming to curb what they call religious extremism and terrorism.
China has been accused of genocide and crimes against humanity against Uyghurs by Human Rights Watch and other groups around the world.
