Utah lawmaker sparks controversy with social media post of Muslim tradition
A video posted by Utah Rep. Trevor Lee has ignited a fierce online debate.
On Monday, Lee shared a video on X of Shia Muslims observing Arba’in, a significant religious event.
The footage, shot from a car window, showed women in black clothing and children observing the event.
In his brief commentary, Lee highlighted the absence of American flags, which was met with backlash.
Critics have accused him of racism and sparking negative commentary about Islam.
Lee defended his post, claiming he meant no offense and was merely sharing something he found unusual for his area.
However, many argue his actions were meant to incite fear and prejudice.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations has urged Lee to engage with the Muslim community to foster understanding.
Lee has yet to respond to this request.
