US to release $3.8 billion to Israel for weapons amid Gaza war
The US is set to release $3.5 billion to Israel for the purchase of American weapons.
The funds are from a $14.1 billion supplemental bill passed in April.
The State Department notified Congress of the decision on Aug. 8.
The funding comes as Israel faces potential backlash from Iran and Hezbollah following its recent military actions in the Middle East.
These include the assassination of Hezbollah leader Fuad Shukr, and Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh, who was the chief negotiator working toward a cease-fire in Israel’s war on Gaza.
While Israel has claimed responsibility for Shukr’s murder, it has not done so for Haniyeh’s assassination, although Hamas, anonymous US government officials, and analysts around the world say Israel is behind it.
Criticism is mounting over the latest US aid, particularly as Israel’s relentless killings of Palestinians in Gaza have surged.
Human rights groups and former US officials are calling for a halt in the arms transfers, citing concerns over violations of international law and human rights abuses.
A recent report suggested Israel’s use of US-made weapons is inconsistent with international humanitarian law.
