US Supreme Court hints at upholding TikTok ban
The Supreme Court appears to be in favor of the sell-or-ban law approved by Congress to restrict access to social media platform TikTok.
The nine justices listened to oral arguments from lawyers of TikTok, who appealed against a lower court’s rulings rejecting their argument.
TikTok’s attorneys say the ban violates free speech rights protected by the First Amendment.
The judges looked unconvinced by TikTok’s free speech arguments.
Their primary concern seemed to have centered on national security implications of a social media platform with foreign owners.
TikTok is owned by Chinese-based parent company ByteDance.
Trump has urged the court to temporarily delay the ban’s implementation, allowing him time as president to negotiate a deal with TikTok.
