US says proposed UN resolution on Israeli settlements ‘unhelpful’
Washington, United States (AFP):
The United States said Thursday that a proposed UN Security Council resolution calling on Israel to halt settlements was “unhelpful,” without explicitly threatening a veto.
“Our view is that the introduction of this resolution was unhelpful in supporting the conditions necessary to advance the negotiations of a two-state solution, just like we believe that the news out of Israel on Sunday was unhelpful,” State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said, referring to Israel’s settlement decision.
Israel government on Sunday allowed nine Jewish settler outposts in the occupied West Bank and announced mass construction of new homes in established settlements.
A UN resolution that could be put to a vote in the Security Council early next week demands an immediate halt to all Israeli settlement activities, condemns Israeli attempts to annex settlements and outposts, and calls for their immediate reversal.
