US sanctions Sudan’s RSF leader over genocide atrocities
The U.S. has imposed sanctions on Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces leader Mohammad Hamdan Daglo, known as Hemedti.
This is for his role in genocide and systematic atrocities.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken condemned the RSF and allied militias for targeting civilians based on ethnicity, committing mass killings, and using sexual violence as a weapon.
Blinken also highlighted their attacks on fleeing civilians and obstruction of vital humanitarian aid.
The U.S. Treasury has sanctioned seven companies and one individual tied to the RSF.
These measures come as Sudan continues to grapple with a violent conflict between the RSF and the national army since April 2023.
The war has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced 14 million people.
The sanctions underscore the U.S.’s stance against the RSF’s atrocities.
