US sanctions individuals, companies for weapons smuggling for Houthis
The US has announced sanctions against one person and three companies for alleged involvement in facilitating weapons procurement and smuggling for the Yemeni Houthis.
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said they are accused of supplying dual-use and military-grade materials for the manufacture and deployment of missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles that “threaten the interests” of the US and its allies.
The US also sanctioned one entity and its two vessels linked to what it called “illicit Houthi commercial shipments.”
Miller said one of these allegedly transported goods on behalf of a Houthi financial network and Iranian military affiliates.
The sanctions come amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran.
Iran fired nearly 200 ballistic missiles at Israel on Tuesday.
It says it was in retaliation for Israel’s actions, including the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in late July and the killings of Hezbollah and Iranian military personnel in Beirut in late September.
Israel has vowed to retaliate.
The backdrop of the escalation is Israel’s war on Gaza, which has killed more than 41,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children.
Israel also expanded its war to Lebanon, launching deadly strikes across the country, which have killed more than 960 victims and injured more than 2,700 since Sept. 23.
