US House targets ICC over Israeli arrest warrants
The U.S. House has passed a bill to sanction the International Criminal Court or ICC over arrest warrants issued for Israeli officials.
The bill, called the Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act, aims to penalize anyone assisting ICC efforts to prosecute Americans or Israelis.
It passed with a 243-140 vote in the 119th Congress’ first week.
The ICC has issued arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes in Gaza.
A number of Democratic representatives criticized the move.
Despite the backlash, Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune pledged to advance the legislation.
