US demands response from Syrian government about death of Syrian-American psychotherapist
The US has demanded answers from Syria about the death of a Syrian-American psychotherapist.
Majd Kamalmaz died while being held in Syria.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken says Kamalmaz had traveled there to provide medical services to those traumatized by the Syrian civil war.
He was last seen at a Syrian government checkpoint in 2017.
Kamalmaz was tortured to death by President Bashar al-Assad’s regime forces, the Syrian Network for Human Rights said in late May.
Kamalmaz’s family had not heard from him since his detention.
In March 2011, popular protests erupted in Syria demanding a peaceful transfer of power, but the Assad regime suppressed demonstrators militarily.
It pushed the country into a civil war, killing over half a million Syrians.
Syria has also since witnessed unprecedented devastation and displacement, according to the U.N.
More than 6 million Syrians have fled the country, with 3 million being hosted by Turkey, and 6.7 million internally displaced.
