US Central Command praises slain PKK/YPG leader killed in N Syria
ANKARA (AA) – The US Central Command (CENTCOM) on Sunday praised a PKK/YPG member who had been killed by Turkish forces in northern Syria on Friday.
“Salwa Yusuk (AKA Ciyan Afrin), a Deputy Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) – along with 2 fellow female fighters – was killed in an attack near Qamishli, Syria, on July 22, 2022,” said CENTCOM on Twitter.
Praising the slain fighter, the CENTCOM also extended condolences.
The YPG is the Syrian branch of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Turkiye, which officially considers the group as terrorist, is actively engaged in military combat against these groups in Syria and Iraq. However, US support for the YPG-led Syrian Defence Force continues as the US uses the group against ISIS in Syria and Iraq. US support to the YPG as part of the SDF has significantly strained relations with Ankara.
