US announces new visa restrictions on Syrian officials over rights abuses
The U.S. has announced new visa restrictions targeting 10 Syrian government officials and their family members.
They are accused of being responsible for or complicit in the repression of Syrians through violence and severe human rights abuses.
State Department Spokesman Matthew Miller says the new restrictions supplement the visa restrictions announced in December 2023.
Those targeted 11 Syrian regime officials and their immediate families.
This year marks the 13th anniversary of the pro-democracy Syrian uprising.
President Bashar al-Assad brutally cracked down on the dissidents and protestors, sparking a civil war that has killed over 300,000 people.
UN officials have documented war crimes including the use of chemical weapons, starvation, deportations, blockades, arbitrary arrests and torture.
