Unions sue Treasury over data leak to Musk-led agency
Three major federal employee unions have sued the Treasury Department for sharing confidential data with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.
The Alliance for Retired Americans, the American Federation of Government Employees, and the Service Employees International Union filed the lawsuit in a Washington, DC court on Monday.
It accuses Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent of allowing Musk’s department full access to sensitive information while punishing officials who tried to protect it.
They argue that federal law does not allow personal data to be shared with Musk or the DOGE.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer urged Congress to act if the DOGE’s access is not revoked immediately.
He has also vowed to push for legislation to prevent what he called “unlawful meddling” in the Treasury’s systems.
