UNICEF to rebuild 50 schools in Afghanistan
KABUL, Afghanistan (MNTV) — The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will renovate 50 schools across Logar province, offering thousands of Afghan children a better learning environment after years of destruction caused by war and natural disasters, officials said.
The Logar Education Department confirmed that schools in the provincial capital Pul-i-Alam and various districts will be rebuilt over the next year, with an estimated budget of $450,000, according to Pajhwok Afghan News.
Shahpur Arab, a spokesman for the department, said the reconstruction will include painting, repairing doors and windows, fixing walls, and other essential maintenance, ultimately benefiting nearly 40,000 students.
Arab added that authorities are also working to construct permanent buildings for schools that currently operate without proper facilities.
Many schools in Logar remain in dire conditions, with some destroyed during conflicts or damaged by floods. Akhtar Mohammad, a local resident, welcomed UNICEF’s initiative, noting that “50 schools were destroyed in past wars and floods.”
However, he emphasized that the Ministry of Education must also prioritize constructing buildings for schools where students still study outdoors or in makeshift spaces.
According to government figures, 287 public schools are active in Logar, but 90 of them lack permanent buildings, forcing students to attend classes in rented houses or under the open sky.
With this latest effort, UNICEF aims to address some of the critical gaps in education infrastructure and ensure that thousands of Afghan children can study in safe and dignified environments.
