UNICEF Reports 435 children killed, 2,000 injured in Sudan conflict
KHARTUM, Sudan – The ongoing conflict in Sudan is having a devastating impact on the lives of children.
According to UNICEF, 435 children have lost their lives and more than 2,000 have been injured since the conflict began in April.
UNICEF’s Ted Chaiban expressed shock at the scale of the impact during his visit to the country.
“The scale of the impact that this conflict has had on children in Sudan in the past 100 days is almost beyond comprehension,” he said.
He said that children are not only being killed and injured daily, but are also being subjected to abductions.
Sudan is home to nearly 14 million children who are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
Before the conflict, there were already 3.8 million internally displaced persons, nearly half of whom were children. Now, another 1.7 million children have been forced to flee their homes.
UNICEF warns that some 4.2 million women and girls are at risk of experiencing gender-based violence. The International Organization for Migration estimates that at least 737,801 people have left Sudan for neighboring countries.
