Undocumented immigrants pay higher taxes than wealthiest American
A new study reveals undocumented immigrants are paying higher state and local tax rates than the top one percent of Americans in most states.
According to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, undocumented workers contributed $96.7 billion in taxes in 2022 — $59.4 billion in federal taxes and $37.4 billion in state and local taxes.
This amounts to on average more than $8,000 per person.
The study also highlights that over one-third of these taxes fund programs undocumented workers can’t access such as Social Security and Medicare.
If such immigrants could work legally, their tax contributions could rise by $40.2 billion annually.
This disparity underscores the significant tax burden shouldered by undocumented workers compared to the wealthiest Americans, who pay a lower rate.
