UN report: Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan’s prosecution ‘politically motivated’
The UN’s Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has criticized the prosecution of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The group says it lacks legal grounds and is politically driven.
The charges relate to alleged concealment of gifts from the Toshakhana during his tenure as prime minister, as well as undervalued jewelry. The Toshakhana is a repository for gifts to Pakistani government officials.
Khan, who also heads the country’s largest political party, the Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf, was convicted in one case by the Election Commission of Pakistan. He was given a three-year jail term, later suspended by the Islamabad High Court.
He is being prosecuted on various other charges.
The UN’s report says these actions were aimed at politically sidelining Khan.
