UN calls on Taliban to overturn decision to close beauty salons
UNITED NATIONS (AA) – The U.N. has urged the Taliban not to implement its recent order to close beauty salons.
Speaking to Türkiye’s Anadolu news agency, U.N. official Farhan Haq said the restrictions will have a negative impact on the Afghan economy.
It also contradicts stated support for women’s entrepreneurship.
Haq said the UN mission remains in contact with the Taliban to seek a reversal of the decree.
”This new restriction on women’s rights will impact negatively on the economy and contradicts stated support for women’s entrepreneurship,” he said.
The Taliban has set a one-month deadline to close beauty salons as it expands its repressive rule over women.
Taliban rulers have engaged in a sustained assault on human rights and women’s rights despite their pledges to protect them.
Last April, they banned Afghan women from working with NGOs.
Women and girls have been stripped of their rights under the Taliban, including education, and they have been excluded from public life.
Thousands of women have since lost their jobs or been forced to resign from government institutions and the private sector.
The Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan on August 15, 2021, following the collapse of the U.S.-backed Ashraf Ghani government.
