Uganda Muslim Council condemns Quran burning in Sweden
KAMPALA, Uganda – Muslims in the East African country of Uganda strongly condemned the recent incident of Quran burning in Sweden.
The Deputy Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa, expressed his outrage, calling the act “barbaric and disrespectful”.
He appealed to Sweden and other European countries to cease protecting actions that provoke and disturb the social peace of Muslims.
He said it is shocking that in a civilized society like Europe, someone can provoke the anger of over 2 billion people without facing any consequences.
He said Freedom of expression should not be exercised in a way that diminishes the rights and dignity of others.
He emphasized the need for a consistent standard regarding freedom of expression.
He said while it is illegal to deny or write negatively about the Holocaust, it is permissible to offend Muslims.
He called it a clear double standard.
He said the Uganda Muslim Council is calling for a single standard that respects the sentiments and beliefs of all individuals, regardless of their religion.
