UC Berkeley antisemitism lawsuit opens door for free-Palestine students to intervene
A federal judge has allowed free-Palestine student activists at UC Berkeley to join a lawsuit alleging antisemitism against the university.
The Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law filed the lawsuit in late 2023, claiming UC Berkeley failed to address antisemitic incidents and protests that called for Israeli divestment.
The university contends that clearing the protests would infringe on students’ constitutional rights.
The recent ruling by U.S. District Court Judge James Donato permits six students to present defenses not covered by the university.
Activists argue that the lawsuit aims to suppress free-Palestinian speech and weaken related student organizations.
At a press conference, Fight For Equality By Any Means Necessary (BAMN) organizer Cruz claimed the movement is facing censorship masked as concerns over antisemitism, asserting the necessity to protect free speech on campus.
The case is still pending a decision on UC Berkeley’s motion to dismiss.
