U.S. Sanctions Sudan’s Central Reserve Police Over ‘Serious’ Rights Abuses
On Monday, the U.S. sanctioned Sudan’s Central Reserve Police or CRP over alleged “serious human rights abuses” carried out against anti-coup protesters.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the U.S. is acting to “hold to account those perpetrating abuses and to deter future violence.”
There are ongoing reports of rape, killings, torture, and arbitrary arrests being carried out by Sudan’s CRP.
The militarized police force has been at the “forefront” of efforts to crack down on demonstrators protesting last October’s coup in the country.
The US Treasury Department said in January, police opened live fire on protesters at the University of Khartoum’s Faculty of Medicine.
Two people were killed.
