U.S. Health Care Firm To Reopen Infant Formula Facility
Abbott Laboratories has agreed to reopen its infant formula facility in Sturgis, Michigan.
Abbott Chairman and CEO Robert Ford said its re-opening will ease the nationwide formula shortage.
On Monday, the health care company said its agreement with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will ensure production resumes and is maintained at this facility.
This was after the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan approved the consent decree.
The facility was closed due to bacterial contamination after four infants who consumed baby formula produced there fell ill from bacterial infections.
Two of those infants subsequently died.
The FDA said 80% of baby formula was in stock across the U.S. for the week ending May 8.
Abbott is the biggest baby formula manufacturer in the U.S.
