U.S. Disappointed By Attempts To ‘Legitimize’ Syria’s Assad
The United States said it is disappointed and troubled by attempts to provide legitimacy to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
US State Department spokesperson Ned Price made the statement after Assad’s visit to the United Arab Emirates last Friday.
It was Assad’s first visit to an Arab country since the outbreak of the Syrian conflict in 2011.
Price urged states considering engagement with the Assad regime to weigh carefully its “horrific atrocities” on Syrians over the last decade.
Price also said it is important to consider the Syrian government’s ongoing efforts to deny much of the country access to humanitarian aid and security.
In March 2011, popular protests erupted in Syria, demanding a peaceful transfer of power, but Assad’s regime chose to suppress it militarily.
