U.S. Big City Hate Crimes Spiked By 39% In 2021: Report
Preliminary data show a double-digit spike in hate crimes last year, and a continued rise into 2022.
Bias-motivated incidents in 37 major U.S. cities increased by nearly 39% on average.
The 10 largest metropolitan areas reported a record 54.5% increase.
Incidents targeting Asian and Jewish Americans accounted for the bulk of cases.
The analysis of national police data was compiled by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University.
Center Executive Director Brian Levin said the trend of bias incidents rising by 30% on average in 15 large cities, is likely to continue.
In 2021, anti-Asian incidents jumped 224% in the large U.S. cities, according to the FBI’s annual hate crime report.
