TV news team covering robbery is robbed near Chicago
Spanish language TV crew, who shooting report on the robberies were attacked by masked and armed men who took their camera and other personal items
CHICAGO – A TV news team was robbed at gunpoint while covering a series of robberies near the U.S. city of Chicago.
The Spanish language Univision Chicago TV, consisting of a reporter and a photographer, was shooting a report on the robberies in the West Town neighborhood.
They were attacked by three masked and armed men who took their camera and other personal items.
The vice president of Univision Chicago’s news department, Luis Godinez, told media representatives that the footage they shot was on the stolen camera and the story was never broadcast.
This is the second robbery this month involving a Chicago news crew.
On Aug. 8, a photographer from WLS-TV was assaulted and robbed as he prepared to cover a news conference.
The robberies have prompted the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians to warn of increasing security threats to news station employees.
The union is calling on news stations to take additional security precautions, such as hiring security guards for some TV teams.
The union’s president, Raza Siddiqui, said they have scheduled a security meeting for their members to discuss how they can provide support.
