Türkiye takes control of military base in Chad, expanding presence in Africa
An ambitious Türkiye, upon diminishing influence of European countries in Africa, grabs the opportunity to fill the void and emerge as a strong security provider in the region
N’DJAMENA, Chad (MNTV) –Türkiye is set to assume control of the Abéché military base in Chad, marking a significant shift in regional security dynamics and reinforcing Ankara’s growing military influence in Africa.
This move follows France’s withdrawal from the country and signals Türkiye deepening role as a security partner in the region, says Military Africa, an African daily.
In January, France formally handed over the Abéché base to Chadian authorities, concluding its long-standing military presence in the country.
This transition occurred after Chad officially ended its military cooperation with its former colonial power in 2024, leading to the departure of French troops beginning in December.
With France’s exit, Türkiye is actively positioning itself within Chad’s military framework, deploying drones and securing strategic bases in Abéché and Faya-Largeau.
Analysts suggest this move not only bolsters Ankara’s influence in the Sahel region but also serves as a counterweight to Russia’s growing involvement in Africa’s security affairs.
Previously utilized by French forces, the Abéché base holds strategic importance, and Türkiye’s takeover fills the void left by Paris.
Meanwhile, Turkish broadcaster TRT Haber reported that Chadian authorities formally granted Ankara control over the Abéché base under an agreement finalized in mid-January, following negotiations between Türkiye’s ambassador in N’Djamena and Chadian officials.
Türkiye’s military engagement comes shortly after the last French troops departed Chad.
Turkish media have long criticized France’s presence in the region, attributing instability and economic challenges to its influence.
Experts believe Ankara has been strategically preparing to replace France as Chad’s primary defense partner.
Relations between Türkiye and Chad have significantly strengthened in recent years.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has reiterated Ankara’s commitment to expanding defense and security cooperation with Chad, highlighting the importance of joint efforts in securing the Sahel region.
Türkiye had previously supplied Chad with HÜRKUŞ light attack aircraft, Aksungur and ANKA drones, and military advisors stationed at the Faya-Largeau base.
This latest move reflects Türkiye’s broader strategy of deepening its influence in Africa, strengthening defense ties, and assuming roles previously dominated by other foreign powers.
By increasing its military footprint in Chad, Türkiye aims to enhance regional security while asserting itself as a key player in Africa’s evolving geopolitical landscape.
