Turkey Suspends Khashoggi Murder Trial
A Turkish court has suspended the trial in absentia of 26 Saudis accused of killing Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.
The court also ruled for the case to be handed over to Saudi Arabia.
Khashoggi’s fiancee Hatice Cengiz said she would appeal the court’s decision that came amid warnings from human rights groups.
The 59-year-old journalist was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2, 2018.
Last week, the prosecutor had called for the trial to be transferred to Saudi authorities.
Turkey’s justice minister said the government would approve that request.
Human rights groups warned turning the case over to the kingdom would lead to a cover-up of the killing.
