Kash Patel opposes pardons for Jan. 6 rioters
President Donald Trump’s nominee for FBI director Kash Patel rejects pardons for those who attacked police during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
During his Senate hearing, Patel said he opposes commuting sentences for anyone who committed violence against law enforcement.
His stance differs from Trump, who pardoned around 1,500 people linked to the violence, including those convicted of assaulting police.
Patel distanced himself from the pardons but declined to comment on specific cases.
He assured senators he would uphold the FBI’s independence and avoid political investigations.
Patel refused to say if he would charge former FBI Director Christopher Wray, instead stressing his focus on tackling violent crime and national security threats.
