Trump on Jan. 6 said to choose him or Constitution, says Pence
WASHINGTON – Former Vice President Mike Pence says ex-President Donald Trump asked him to choose between him and the Constitution on January sixth twenty twenty-one.
That was the day Trump supporters stormed the capitol building in Washington, DC.
This was to prevent Congress from officially certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.
The violence was connected to seven deaths and led to over a million dollars in damages to the Capitol building.
Commenting on the indictment of Trump this week, Pence says it was an important reminder that a person cannot be above the Constitution.
He says that on January sixth, he put the Constitution above Trump and always will.
“Our country is more important than one man. Our constitution is more important than any one man’s career,” he said, adding: “On January 6th, Former President Trump demanded that I choose between him and the Constitution. I chose the Constitution and I always will.”
The former vice-president also emphasized that such an individual should never be president of the United States.
Pence was Trump’s vice-presidential running mate in the twenty sixteen presidential election.
But now, like Trump, he is running as a Republican presidential candidate in next year’s election.
Trump has been charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States by obstructing an official proceeding.
The charges included trying to convince Pence not to perform his constitutionally mandated job of certifying election results.
