Trump hints at payback for Jan. 6 rioters
President Donald Trump has suggested financial compensation could be given to those prosecuted over the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
In an interview with Newsmax, Trump said there is “talk” in the government about paying Jan. 6 defendants.
He called them peaceful protesters.
Trump says he has already “taken care” of many of them and claimed officials “really like that group of people.”
Trump praised Ashli Babbitt, who was killed during the violence in the U.S. Capitol, calling her a “really good person” and a “big MAGA fan.”
He criticized Lt. Michael Byrd, the officer who shot her and said he might “take a look at it.”
Byrd was cleared of wrongdoing after a federal investigation.
Trump earlier pardoned around 1,500 rioters, including those convicted of assault and destruction.
But this is the first time he has floated the idea of compensation.
Some of his allies, including Ed Martin, have pushed for reparations for convicted rioters.
Trump’s comments are drawing sharp criticism as he continues to defend those involved in the violent attack on Congress.
The January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters after his defeat in the 2020 presidential election led to the deaths of five people.
