Trump becomes 1st US president convicted of felonies
In an unprecedented moment in U.S. history, Donald Trump will take office as the first president convicted of felonies.
On Friday, just days before his second inauguration, Trump was sentenced after being found guilty of 34 felonies related to hush money payments during the 2016 election.
The New York State Supreme Court hearing concluded with Judge Juan Merchan granting an unconditional discharge.
Trump avoided fines and jail time despite the gravity of the charges.
Critics called the decision a blow to accountability.
Noah Bookbinder, head of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics, called the sentence an “affront to justice.”
He said “A convicted felon is now set to lead the nation”.
