Trump appoints first Hindu to cabinet-level position
President-elect Donald Trump has appointed former Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard as the new U.S. intelligence chief.
“For over two decades, Tulsi has fought for our Country and the Freedoms of all Americans,” Trump wrote in a statement. “As a former Candidate for the Democrat Presidential Nomination, she has broad support in both Parties – She is now a proud Republican!
“I know Tulsi will bring the fearless spirit that has defined her illustrious career to our Intelligence Community, championing our Constitutional Rights, and securing Peace through Strength. Tulsi will make us all proud!”
She will be the first Hindu American to hold a cabinet-level position.
Her nomination has sparked controversy as Gabbard has no direct experience in intelligence.
Critics, including The Atlantic, warn that she could pose a national security risk, and there are doubts about whether the Senate will approve her appointment.
Gabbard, who was the first Hindu to serve in Congress, has faced criticism for her alleged ties to Hindu extremist groups.
She has also extended support to autocratic leaders like India’s Narendra Modi, Egypt’s Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and Syria’s Bashar al-Assad.
As the confirmation process begins, experts say, the future of her nomination remains uncertain.
