Trump administration to bring back family detention for migrants, Tom Homan says
WASHINGTON (AA) – President-elect Donald Trump’s top border adviser said Thursday that the new administration will reintroduce family detention for migrants with children.
“You knew you were in the country illegally and chose to have a child. So you put your family in that position,” Tom Homan told The Washington Post.
Homan said the administration intends to construct family detention facilities.
“We’re going to need to construct family facilities,” he said. “How many beds we’re going to need will depend on what the data says.”
Under the Trump administration, he said families detained together would be deported together. He acknowledged, however, that the government cannot remove children who are US citizens. The policy gives a choice to parents to decide whether they would split up the family, he added.
The Biden administration ended family detention in 2021.
