UN court allows Nicaragua case against Germany to proceed without halting arms exports to Israel
The Hague, Netherlands
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ruled against issuing emergency measures to halt German arms exports to Israel.
Presiding Judge Nawaf Salam delivered the verdict, expressing deep concern over the dire conditions in Gaza.
He said the court by 15 votes to one finds that the circumstances are not such as to require provisional measures.
However, the court acknowledges the catastrophic living conditions in Gaza.
Despite rejecting the emergency halt, the ICJ has allowed the case to proceed, denying Germany’s request for dismissal.
Nicaragua, which presented the case, accused Germany of violating the Genocide Convention by supplying arms to Israel.
Germany has refuted the claims, asserting that the case lacked evidence and jurisdiction.
The ruling holds significance as it is the first involving two countries not directly engaged in the alleged atrocities.
Experts say Germany’s substantial military support to Israel, totaling close to $350 million in 2023, adds weight to the case’s implications.
