Top prosecutor for US capital to step down before Trump takes office
WASHINGTON (AA) – The top federal prosecutor for the nation’s capital said Monday that he will step down before US President-elect Donald Trump takes office.
“Serving as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia has been the honor of a lifetime,” Matthew Graves said in a statement.
“I am deeply thankful to Congresswoman (Eleanor) Holmes Norton for recommending me; to President (Joe) Biden for nominating me; and to Attorney General (Merrick) Garland for placing his trust in me,” he added.
Graves’s resignation will take effect Jan. 16. Bridget M. Fitzpatrick will become acting US Attorney until a successor to Graves is nominated by Trump and approved by the Senate.
Graves was confirmed by the Senate on Oct. 28, 2021, and was sworn in as the US Attorney for the District of Columbia on Nov. 5 that year.
