Tlaib leads House Democrats in demanding release of Khalil
A group of House Democrats is demanding the release of Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil.
Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib led the charge at a Capitol Hill press conference, calling Khalil’s detention and possible deportation “illegal.”
Khalil is a Columbia University graduate and legal permanent resident in the U.S.
He was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement or ICE agents on March 8.
His visa and green card were revoked after orders from Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The Trump administration claims Khalil was involved in “Hamas-aligned activities,” but has shown no evidence.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal called the move “unconstitutional,” slamming the detention of Khalil in a Louisiana ICE facility, far from his New York home.
She warns that this could be just the beginning of attacks on constitutional rights.
Congressman Greg Casar says activists and whistleblowers are being targeted next, accusing the Trump administration of authoritarian tactics.
