Terrorists attack a holy shrine in Iran
-Gunmen entered Shah Cheragh shrine in Shiraz on Sunday and began firing at security personnel and worshippers
TEHRAN, Iran – A holy shrine in Iran’s southern city of Shiraz has been targeted in a deadly attack for the second time in a year.
Two gunmen entered the Shah Cheragh shrine at 7 p.m. local time Sunday and began firing at security personnel and worshippers, killing at least one person and wounding several others.
One gunman was arrested at the scene with an assault rifle and eight magazines full of ammunition. The second gunman fled the scene.
This is the second attack on the shrine in less than a year.
In October 2022, a lone gunman killed 13 people and injured 40 others before being killed by security forces.
The terrorist group ISIS claimed responsibility for the 2022 attack.
The group was also responsible for coordinated attacks in 2017 on Iran’s parliament and the mausoleum of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in Tehran.
In early June, two men were executed in Iran for allegedly being in contact with ISIS militants in neighboring Afghanistan who supplied the gunman with the rifle and took him to the scene of the shooting.
