In a meeting with Biden, tech leaders commit to address risks of artificial intelligence
WASHINGTON (AA) – Seven major technology companies have pledged to address the risks of artificial intelligence (AI) and use it for the benefit of humanity.
In a meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, they committed to ensuring responsible innovation.
Biden said AI offered both “enormous” risks to global societies and economies and “incredible opportunities.”
The White House said that AI company leaders have agreed on core principles to ensure safety and trust. The statement said the meeting was a critical step toward developing responsible AI.
The companies have committed to testing their AI products internally and externally before launch.
They will share information within the industry and with civil society groups.
Heads of seven major tech firms, including Google, Microsoft, Inflection AI, Anthropic, Meta, OpenAI and Amazon Web Services, attended the meeting.
“These seven companies have agreed to voluntary commitments for responsible innovation,” Biden said, saying the pacts will be implemented “immediately.”
“This is a serious responsibility. We have to get it right. And there’s an enormous potential upside as well,” he added.
Companies will also invest in cybersecurity and insider threat protection, and enable third-party reporting of their AI systems after they are launched.
Technology companies will also research the potential social harms of AI.
The Biden administration is working with Congress to pass bipartisan legislation to regulate the rapidly evolving technology.
