Syrian regime breaks diplomatic ties with Ukraine
ANKARA (AA) – The Syrian regime on Wednesday severed diplomatic relations with Ukraine, according to the country’s Foreign Ministry.
“The Syrian Arab Republic has decided to break diplomatic relations with Ukraine in conformity with the principle of reciprocity and in response to the decision of the Ukrainian government,” a foreign ministry official said in a statement.
The ministry said the Ukrainian government “has practically severed relations with Syria since 2018 when it refused to renew residency visas for Syrian diplomats working at the Syrian Embassy in Kyiv.”
It noted that the Ukrainian move hindered Syrian diplomats from carrying out their duties.
The operations of “the Syrian Embassy were suspended as a result of the hostile attitudes of the Ukrainian government,” the statement said.
The Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad is a close ally of Russia, which launched a war on Ukraine in February.
According to UN figures, the Russian war has claimed lives of at least 5,110 civilians and displaced over 15 million, with over 8.4 million fleeing to other countries.
