Swedish man convicted for burning Quran
A Swedish court has convicted a man for burning a copy of the Quran in public.
The ruling comes just days after his co-defendant was shot dead.
Salwan Najem received a suspended sentence and a fine of $364 for hate crimes.
The court said he made derogatory remarks about Muslims and incited unrest in 2023.
His fellow campaigner, 38-year-old Iraqi refugee Salwan Momika, was shot dead on January 29 near Stockholm.
He had been due to receive a verdict in a similar case.
Sweden’s prime minister suspects foreign involvement in the killing.
The Stockholm court ruled that while Sweden has strong free speech protections, Najem and Momika had overstepped acceptable religious criticism.
However, it noted that burning the Quran is not always classified as a hate crime.
Najem’s lawyer has announced an appeal.
The case has strained Sweden’s relations with Muslim nations.
