Sweden considers ban on desecration of Quran
STOCKHOLM (AA) — Sweden is considering a ban on the desecration of the Muslim holy book the Quran.
According to a local daily, Swedish Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer said his government is considering enacting a law to stop the burning of holy books.
Strommer said such acts pose a threat to Sweden’s national security.
They damage the country’s relations with the Islamic world and could provoke terrorist attacks against the country.
He said against this background, it is reasonable to review the legal situation.
Last month, a person identified as Salwan Momika burned a copy of the Quran outside the Stockholm Mosque in Sweden under police protection.
His provocative act coincided with Eid al-Adha, one of the most important Islamic religious festivals celebrated by Muslims worldwide.
It sparked widespread condemnation throughout the Islamic world, including Türkiye, Jordan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Senegal, Morocco, and Mauritania.
In January, a far-right politician set fire to a copy of the Quran outside the Turkish Embassy in Sweden.
