Surge in anti-Muslim discrimination alarms EU rights agency
Muslims in Europe are confronting increasing levels of racism and discrimination, according to a new report from the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA).
The document notes a “sharp rise” in anti-Muslim sentiment, worsened by Israel’s war on Gaza since October 2023.
That has ignited a wave of hostility across several EU nations.
Nearly half of Muslims in the EU now report experiencing racism, up from 39% in 2016, with the highest rates found in Austria, Germany, and Finland.
The FRA has stressed that discrimination extends beyond religion, noting that it affects individuals based on skin color, ethnicity, and immigrant status.
Analysts say job market discrimination is particularly alarming.
Many Muslims are overqualified for their positions and facing economic hardships.
The report also underscores a growing concern about the effect of dehumanizing rhetoric in the Middle East on Muslim communities in Europe.
