Supreme Court clears Trump’s deportation plan, with conditions
The Supreme Court has ruled that the Trump administration can continue to deport illegal immigrants under the Alien Enemies Act.
In a 5-4 ruling, the apex court overturned a Washington court’s order that blocked mass deportations last month.
Hundreds of alleged Venezuelan gang members faced removal without hearings.
The Supreme Court says deportations can go ahead but only with due process.
Detainees must be told they face removal and be given a fair chance to challenge their detention before being expelled.
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson strongly dissented.
She warned that the ruling risks what she said is a “new era of procedural variability.”
Critics also fear President Donald Trump’s aggressive use of the 18th century law.
The Alien Enemies Act has been used only during major wars.
Lawyers for the Venezuelans argue that the ruling gives the government too much unchecked power.
They say it could allow authorities to quickly deport anyone they label a gang member.
Experts say the case highlights growing tensions over immigration and presidential power ahead of the 2024 election.
