Sudanese army regains key town in Al Jazirah state
The Sudanese army says it has regained the key town of Tambul, its second victory in the state of eastern Al Jazirah within 48 hours.
Supported by allied forces and volunteers, the army said it inflicted heavy losses on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces or RSF.
Tambul follows Wad Madani, the state capital, reclaimed a day earlier after a year under RSF control, the army said.
RSF still controls significant parts of Al Jazirah, excluding Tambul, Wad Madani, and Al-Manaqil.
The region saw renewed clashes in October after RSF commander Abu Aqla Kikal defected to the army.
The conflict, ongoing since April 2023, has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced 14 million people, according to the U.N.
Independent research estimates the death toll could be as high as 130,000.
