Sri Lanka launches ‘Salam Ramadan’ to celebrate Islamic culture
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (MNTV) — The Western Provincial Council has announced the launch of ‘Salam Ramadan,’ a cultural festival set to take place from March 21 to 31 in Colombo.
The initiative aims to enhance the Ramadan experience in Sri Lanka’s capital through illuminated cityscapes, cultural showcases, and community-driven events.
The festival, organized by the Ramadan Task Force, seeks to bridge gaps in awareness about Islam, Ramadan, and the traditions of Sri Lanka’s Muslim community. By creating a festive atmosphere similar to other cultural and religious celebrations in the country, the initiative aligns with the Sri Lankan government’s vision of unity through diversity.
The festival will take place at Green Path, a popular cultural venue, and feature a blend of food, heritage, and interfaith dialogue. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore traditional Ramadan cuisine, historical exhibits, and artistic performances, offering an immersive experience into the rich traditions of Sri Lankan Muslims.
Addressing the media, Rizan Nazeer, Chairman of the Ramadan Task Force, emphasized the festival’s broader significance beyond fasting.
“Ramadan is more than just a month of fasting. There is so much more to share with our fellow Sri Lankans—our traditions, cultural practices, and cuisine,” Nazeer said.
Sri Lanka’s Muslim community is diverse, comprising Moors, Memons, Malays, and Dawoodi Bohras, each with their own unique customs and histories. The festival aims to highlight this diversity, fostering cultural exchange and understanding.
The event is expected to strengthen community ties by promoting interfaith dialogue and economic engagement. Similar to Sri Lanka’s Vesak and Christmas celebrations, ‘Salam Ramadan’ aims to establish Ramadan as an integral part of the nation’s cultural calendar.
